The Giving Tree

Our Partnership: The Giving Tree

Pass the Apple is dedicated to providing educators with the resources they need and deserve. One very exciting way we are improving teachers’ resources is through our partnership with DonorsChoose.org.

We purposely chose to name our partnership The Giving Tree after the well-known children’s book that was both written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. It’s a children’s literature classic that is commonly shared in classrooms across the country. In the book, a tree continues to give selflessly to a child, a concept that we have adapted and hope to encourage amongst teachers.

DonorsChoose.org is an amazing charity that allows teachers to request funding for their classrooms and educational projects. Teachers can ask for anything from art supplies to new microscopes to funding for a class field trip. Donors are then able to go onto the site and look for the schools, teachers, or projects that matter most to them. Then, they have the option to make a charitable gift by donating.

This wonderful organization started back in 2000 by Charles Best, who secretly funded the first ten projects on his own. Since then, DonorsChoose.org has been named one of the fifty most innovative companies in the world by Fast Company, and it has gained the support of such esteemed celebrity endorsers as Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Colbert, Bill and Melinda Gates, and more.

Rewarding Outstanding Work by Giving Back

We believe that the people at DonorsChoose.org are doing excellent work, and we want to do our part to help fund as many projects as possible.

That’s why every time you make a purchase on Pass the Apple, you’ll have the opportunity to round your total up to the next dollar. Your giving will then be donated to projects featured on DonorsChoose.org.

But that’s not all. While all of the projects on DonorsChoose.org are worthwhile, we want to help get educational materials specifically into the hands of our community of teachers.

So if you have a project on DonorsChoose.org that you’re trying to fund, let us know. We are eager to hear about the projects of our teacher community and will assist in the funding of the ones that are most in need of help. Whether you’re hoping to get new technology or a new experience for your students, we want to put the funds that we raise for DonorsChoose.org toward your projects.

As part of The Giving Tree, we’ll feature a new project listed on Donors Choose. We’ll spread awareness of the selected teacher and project not only on the Pass the Apple site, but also through our social media accounts, giving teachers much needed exposure so their projects are successful.

No Gift is Too Small

When you find teaching materials on Pass the Apple at a great discount, we encourage you to consider passing a small portion of your savings along to teachers who are trying to provide the best for their students. Even if you are purchasing an item for as little as a penny, know that Pass the Apple will accept donation amounts that are as small as $1.00. All you have to do is click “Yes!” when asked if you’d like to donate during checkout. It’s really that easy!

Finally, if you have a project on DonorsChoose.org, we want to hear about it. Please send us an email at memberservices@passtheapple.com to discuss the possibility of funding your project with donations collected by Pass the Apple. Please note, only one project may be funded a year. Additionally, Donor Choose projects are for K-12 public schools, including public charter schools, in the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia.
